The Medical Connection
Just how EMFs affect humans is still not entirely known (and will be never admitted by the Industry or by Government). Researchers are trying to pinpoint ways in which EMFs might cause cells to grow and multiply abnormally.
Some studies suggest that EMFs may promote cancer by interfering with the transmission of calcium across the cell membrane, a flow that governs such processes as muscle contraction, egg fertilization, cell division, and growth. EMFs may also disturb a cell’s ability to process hormone, enzyme, and other biological signals that regulate normal growth.
EMFs are known to affect nerve impulses. Melatonin, a regulatory hormone secreted by the pineal gland near the brain, ordinarily stimulates immune responses and may suppress tumor growth. Reduced melatonin production has been linked to breast and prostate cancer. Melatonin secretion in turn is controlled by norepinephrine, a neurotransmitter in the brain. Receptors for its relative, the hormone epinephrine, are disturbed by EMFs.
A San Antonio researcher discovered human cancer cells exposed to 60 Hz fields (the frequency of a high-voltage line) grew as much as 24 times as fast as unexposed cells and showed greatly increased resistance to destruction by the cells of the body’s defense system.

A study released in the Environmental Health Science Perspectives journal, indicates that exposure to EMFs from everyday household appliances has the ability to alter brain cell DNA. Cells experience “cell suicide” in which a cell self-destructs because it cannot repair itself. The high electromagnetic frequencies and radiation generated by industrial plants and equipment, have a negative effect on the human brain, although the electrical companies and the manufacturers of cell phones do not want to admit this. Research seems to prove that high electro-magnetic fields do transport heavy metals to the brain (which are normally filtered out) and have a negative health effect.

Many people are studying the effects of cell phones, computer screens and other electromagnetic fields on our health. The device manufacturers naturally want to minimize any apparent risks from the use of their products.
There is, indeed, a public health risk from EMFs and the government knows about it. A leaked EPA report a few years ago raised suspicions of a link between electromagnetic fields and leukemia, brain tumors, breast and prostrate cancer, even birth defects.
Less-publicized but significant are some of the foreign studies. Canadian researchers had found a high rate of leukemia among children whose mothers had worked at sewing machines while pregnant. Checks showed the operators were exposed to more electromagnetic radiation than people who work on power lines or in power stations.
To some, especially the families of people with unexplained cancers, the sheer volume of research that has been carried out on this issue suggests there must be a cancer connection and perhaps a cover-up. Their suspicion is heightened by the fact that many of the studies are funded by the utility industry, which would be directly affected by the studies’ outcomes. (It’s like the tobacco industry making a study showing smoking is safe — would you believe them ???)
Even scientists who have failed to find a reason for the apparent link refuse to say it is safe to live near a high-voltage power line.
The report leaked by the National Council on Radiation Protection recommended changing the safety limit of 0.2 microteslas (a very weak field compared to those generated by household appliances). A person standing one foot away from a vacuum cleaner or electric drill can be exposed to anywhere between two and 20 microteslas.
Concerns have also been raised about magnetic fields given off by household wiring, high-current conductors concealed in walls, ceilings and floors of commercial office buildings, and by high-voltage transformers that can be found in almost any large building.
A study, conducted by the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, WA. confirmed that telephone linemen, electricians and electric-power workmen are developing breast cancer at six times the expected rate.
Women Especially Vulnerable
Female breast cancer has reached epidemic proportions, with one in ten American women developing it and one in four dying. Alarmingly, of women who develop the disease, 55% have no known risk factors. Breast cancer mortality rates are five times lower in Asia and Africa than in industrialized North America and northern Europe regions where EMFs are omnipresent.
Exposure to EMFs has also shown women to be more prone to PMS, Post-Partum, Anxiety, Depression, and other psychological issues.
Home EMF Dangers & Appliances
Electricity is an inseparable part of our modern day society. This means that EMFs will continue to be all around us. Aside from making our life easier, electricity might also be making us sick.
Many buildings have a sick or imbalanced environment and cause their occupants to feel tired, weak, anxious and sometimes depressed. This may be caused by electromagnetic radiation EMF (as well as other toxic environmental situations).

If your home has high EMF readings, it is important to determine the sources of the EMF so that remedial action can be taken (if possible). Many times a particular room will have a higher EMF reading. Check to see if the electricity is coming into the house on the wall outside that room. When this is the case, it is usually a good idea to block off that room and only use it for storage purposes.

Most US microwave ovens leak and exceed European safety limits. In addition, recent Russian studies have shown that normal microwave cooking converts food protein molecules into carcinogenic substances.
Telephones can emit surprisingly strong EMFs, especially from the handset. This is a problem because we hold the telephone so close to our head. They emit strong fields that travel several inches right into your brain.
Rearrange your office and home area so that you are not exposed to EMFs from the sides/backs of electric appliances and computers. In the home, it is best that all major electrical appliances, such as computers, TVs, refrigerators etc, be placed up against outside walls. That way you are not creating an EMF field in the adjoining room.
Don’t sit too close to your computer. Computer monitors vary greatly in the strength of their EMFs. Don’t stand close to your microwave oven. Move all electrical appliances at least 6 feet from your bed. Eliminate wires running under your bed. Eliminate dimmers and 3-way switches.

These are the new light bulbs many people are using to conserve power. They will soon be mandated by the government as traditional light bulbs will be banned in 2014. These new Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs (CFL) are notorious for generating a high EMF field, higher than normal fluorescent lights. And, because you are more likely to be closer to a CFL lamp, the exposure is even higher.
